Overview

BaseMile is a running coach for the cardio days of the Foundational Fitness week from Andrew Huberman's book Protocols. It pairs with a Bluetooth chest strap, speaks cues with the phone's own voice and turns each run into clear trends. It is an independent project, not affiliated with or endorsed by Andrew Huberman or Huberman Lab.

Challenge

Most fitness apps want an account, a subscription and the cloud. A heart rate coach also has to keep talking with the phone in a pocket, the screen off and no signal.

Approach

We built three run types: Long runs in Zone 2 under a MAF ceiling, Medium runs at 75 to 85% of max heart rate, and Brief runs as 30/60 repeats or a 4x4. Everything runs on the phone, with no account, no server, no sync and no AI.

Outcome

Released as open source on 18 October 2026 under the GPL-3.0, with a signed Android APK on GitHub. It is tested on Android, and iPhone builds can be made from the source.

Key features

  • Three run types

Long runs in Zone 2 under a MAF ceiling, Medium runs at 75 to 85% of max, and Brief runs as 30/60 repeats or a 4x4.

  • Live heart rate from a chest strap

Pairs with any standard Bluetooth heart rate strap. The Garmin HRM-Dual is the tested one.

  • Spoken cues that work offline

Cues use the phone's own voice, so the coach keeps talking with no signal and, on Android, with the screen off.

  • Voice Mode

A hands free screen that holds a strict heart rate band and tells you when you drift out of it.

  • Trends, routes and tests

MAF pace, decoupling, training load and weekly Zone 2 minutes, a heat map of your routes, and tests such as resting and max heart rate.

  • Your runs stay on the phone

No account, server or sync. The only network use is weather, elevation and map tiles, and weather and elevation can be switched off.
